Artist Profile: Zohra Opoku
Meet Zohra Opoku an artist of German and Ghanaian decent based in Accra. Hails from the field of fashion and photography. She holds an MA (2003) in fashion from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. Opoku was introduced to the art world through the Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart, where she talked about her published magazine POKUAA. After her strong learning experiences with the Danish artist/fashion designer Henrik Vibskov (2006-07) she has been recognized by the V&A Museum London, featured in their show publication "Black Style" (2007)
She examines political, historical, cultural and socio-economic context of contemporary Ghana. Her practice centers around textiles and traditional Ghanaian dress codes, which have been an inherent part of the country's identity and industry throughout West Africa's complex history and serves as vehicles for her to connect to the abstraction of identity in a tangible way
Zohras works have been featured in numerous exhibitions at key galleries and museums including the Sean Kelly gallery, New York and the Gallery 1957. Zohra Opoku has been featured in articles of the Financial Times, The Ocula and The Huffington Post. The most recent article is at Mariane Ibrahims New Chicago Gallery, an otherworldly Portrait Series written by Emma Kennedy for the Aperture in September 2019.
Opoku's explorations have been mostly through the lens of her camera; her photography is expressed through screen-printing and the alternative photo process varieties of natural fabrics. In addition to this, garments used in different manifestations of side specific installations.
While her work on social commentary and broadly relevant themes around the human experience, each of Zohra's explorations is intimately rooted in personal identity politics. She repeatedly integrates family heirlooms and her own self-image into her visual observations of Ghana's cultural memory.
